| Michael Marcus' fourth release on Justin Time is both an invocation and celebration, a continuum of the spirit he has received from one of his biggest musical inspirations, Rahsaan Roland Kirk. On his two previous releases for Justin Time, 1997s This Happening and 1998's Involution, the pre-eminent exponent of stritch and saxello conjured up a Rahsaan-ish vibe alongside former Kirk collaborator Jaki Byard. With Byard's untimely passing this year, that direct connection to Rahsaan appeared to be severed. Fortune smiled on Marcus in March of 1999 when Rahn Burton came into his life. A pianist and organist who these days is mainly working at St. Nick's Pub and Showman's Lounge in Harlem, Burton played with Rahsaan on the saxophonist's second album as a leader, 1960's Introducing Roland Kirk on Argo and also on his 1967 landmark The Inflated Tear on Atlantic. Together with drummer Nasheet Waits, they create a scintillating and soulful chemistry on this singular organ trio date. |
