| Featuring Rob Brown on alto sax & flute, Steve Swell on trombone, Joe Morris on double bass and Luther Gray on drums. Rob Brown has been William Parker's saxist of choice for more than decade, in various groups small and large, for good reasons. Rob has his own voice, always plays creative fire and continues to evolve as a bandleader and composer. This is his 10th disc as a leader and again his quartet delivers. Right from the opener, Steve Swell's "Boxed Set", this quartet is spirited, tight and on the money. The theme is rather Ornette-like, with some smokin' solos from Steve on trombone and Rob on alto. That dynamic bean-town rhythm team is also superb throughout. "Semantics-1" and "2" are both fully improvised quartet pieces and show that great free-yet-focused so well. Rob's flute playing sounds excellent on "Semantics-2". "Out of the Lurch" has a fine Monk-like head that is most memorable, with inspired solos from Rob and Steve once more. The title track starts with a solemn duo for alto and trombone, then the bowed bass and mallets on drums enter and add their mysterious vibration. Joe Morris' "King Cobra" has an enchanting, smoky theme and thoughtful solos from Rob and Steve. Rob's "Swarm Village" is a perfect closing piece with the rhythm section sizzling underneath the cerebral, swirling horns of Rob and Steve, sailing around one another in cosmic waves. The title of this CD now makes sense, these are indeed "Radiant Pools" of energy. |
