JazzReview.Com: Trombonist Steve Swell leads this New York City based sextet through a rather symmetrically devised set, featuring free jazz extravaganzas, gobs of tonal contrasts and much more. Recorded live at the New York City venue “Roulette,” the soloists embark upon extended dialogues, as drummer/percussionist Kevin Norton keeps the fire lit throughout. On the twenty-two minute piece titled “Tryarhythmic,” the ensemble incorporates a knock down, drag out, type swing groove amid Afro-Cuban rhythms and funk-rock tendencies. Here, Swell’s voluble lines ride atop pianist Copper-Moore’s swarming undertones via the latter’s intermittent employment of pulsating block chords. The soloists’ tend to converge while often veering off into micro-theme territory. Yet, a distinct sense of perpetual motion pervades this effort, partly due to strong soloing spots by saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc, and trumpeter Matt Lavelle. As this album signifies one of bassist Wilbur Morris’ final recordings. Hence, the musicians render an inspiring series of performances on this noteworthy release.
